Carbon Storage Above and Below Ground in Two Sites in Cascade Brook Watershed, Black Rock Forest, New York
Climate change has become a topic of intense interest over the past several decades. Of particular importance to climate change research is the carbon cycle, its various fluxes, sources and storage components. This study, conducted in Cascade Brook located in Black Rock Forest, New York, seeks to quantify the amount of carbon stored in two different sites. An upland and a lowland site were chosen for the purpose of comparing the carbon stored in two different ecosystems. The results are broken down into above ground carbon (trees and roots) and below ground carbon (leaf litter and soil). Interestingly, more carbon was found in the upland site. Future research will test this result, make comparisons to other studies done in the northern hemisphere, deciduous forests. This research will help to improve predictions about how global carbon "sinks" might change in the future as climate changes.
