Project Plans

Project Plans: 2000

The ICP is conducting our sixth annual summer institute for educators and students from New York City metro area pre-college and undergraduate institutions. Working with scientists at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, students and educators have a unique experience to engage in real time research on science teams tackling problems to improve our understanding of Earth's climate system.

From GISS or their school campuses, 91 students, educators and scientists are participating in research and education development ICP projects or spin-off programs taking place on City University of New York campuses. In total, ten academic institutions are actively involved. These individuals and institutions are a part of the ICP community. In a constant state of growth, this community shares the common interest to use the unique expertise and resources at NASA GISS to help:

  • change the face of science to one that reflects the diversity of our nation
  • reduce the digital divide
  • bridge the gap between the practice, teaching and learning of science
  • prepare students with experiences and skills to be successful in school and work

NASA's core Earth science research program drives the ICP community. Science topics addressed in our research projects include: the physical, chemical and biological processes at work in the climate system, the influence of humans and nature on Earth's climate and the consequences of regional and global change. Each ICP science team consists of students, faculty and scientists working on research problems and related curriculum and public education projects connected to a research area at GISS -- Global Climate Modeling, Climate Impacts and Forcings, Paleoclimate and Radiation. Several teams are using this summer to train new student and faculty researchers and to organize results for potential use in a science publication.

A select group of educators and scientists are working on educational projects to integrate research into science learning and museum exhibits. These projects contribute to ICP's goal for research education by developing students' skills and understandings to participate in original research or the process of discovering what is already known through inquiry.
