EDUCATION: URBANMAAP

School Participation Options

There are three ways to participate in UrbanMAAP. Schools can choose to participate in one, two or all three research activities. Click on each research activity listed below to learn about the different options for participation and then decide which one(s) your school will get involved in this year.

Bold items indicate what teams are expected to deliver in UrbanMAAP

Asthma Survey: Collect and enter asthma data from a school survey
Aerosols Study: Collect and enter aerosol measurements using a hand-held sunphotometer
Research Projects: Select one of the suggested UrbanMAAP research projects, analyze data, and prepare an electronic poster to share research results

Asthma Survey

Preparing to give the school survey

  • Teacher reviews training and background materials provided by UrbanMAAP
  • Form a student research team
  • Get permission from your school to administer the asthma survey to students
  • Hold a training session to build knowledge and skills (see on-line resources)
  • Devise a plan to administer the survey to a representative sample of students
  • Distribute passive parental consent forms to students

Administering the survey and collected asthma data

  • Download the asthma survey from the UrbanMAAP web site
  • Copy the number of surveys needed
  • Distribute the survey to students
  • Read the survey introduction before students begin answering survey questions
  • Collect all the completed surveys

Entering the survey data collected from your school

  • Download the on-line asthma Excel data entry spreadsheet
  • Have a small group of students enter asthma data into the spreadsheet

Aerosols Study (Sunphotometer IOP)

Conduct first team training session

  • Teacher reviews instructions on sunphotometer design/operation and training materials
  • Form a student research team
  • Hold training to introduce sunphotometer and aerosols (see on-line resources)

Conduct second team training session

  • School purchases sunphotometer kit from Globe (external link) using the online order form (external link).
  • Hold training to develop knowledge/skills for collecting and recording data
  • Schedule sessions to assess students' data collection and recording skills
  • Set up a data collection schedule and plan

Collect aerosol data during the week-long IOP

  • Print and distribute copies of the sunphotometer aerosols data collection sheet to students
  • Take measurements for the IOP and record them on the sunphotometer aerosols data collection sheet

Entering the aerosol data collected at your school

  • Create an Excel data entry spreadsheet to store your sunphotometer data
  • Enter the sunphotometer data collected for each day into the spreadsheet program

Research Projects

Preparing and training for UrbanMAAP research projects

  • Form a student research team
  • Teacher reviews on-line resources provided on asthma and aerosol
  • Review and discuss suggested UrbanMAAP research projects and science questions
  • Student select research projects that most interested them
  • Design a training that will best prepare students for the projects and questions selected
  • Students prepare plans to complete the research tasks for the projects selected

Conducting the research

  • Access and organize data for analysis
  • Summarize findings in response to the science questions for the research project
  • Teacher advises students in scheduled meetings to present and discuss progress

Presenting results

  • Review the on-line resource "Guide to Presenting Research"
  • Students prepare a science poster using Microsoft Powerpoint or Word
  • Present your team's posters to students and educators at a school activity
