EDUCATION: URBANMAAPAsthma Survey Project: New York City, Spring 2000The asthma data provided below was collected from two junior high and six senior high schools in New York City, with the exception of one school on Long Island, NY. Approval to conduct the survey in the city schools was obtained from the Board of Education Division of Assessment and Accountability. In addition, parents and guardians of each student were provided with the option for the student to not participate. Student interns and research scientists at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in collaboration with researchers at Mount Sinai Center for Environmental Health prepared the survey instrument. The main goal of the survey was to contribute to the state of understanding concerning the incidence of asthma among New York metropolitan area school-age children. Teachers administered the survey randomly to students at their individual schools from April 10 to April 14, 2000. Students responded to the survey, self-reporting demographic and asthma information to describe themselves and their families.
