Universities Space Research Association (USRA)
-
The NASA Academy:
A national educational, training, and research resource for college undergraduate and graduate students, dedicated to promoting current and future opportunities for innovation and leadership in aerospace related careers.
-
LIGO Project at Caltech:
Undergraduate students are encouraged to participate in the development of gravitational-wave astronomy through the LIGO Project. While opportunities exist for undergraduate research during the academic year (particularly at the Caltech and MIT campuses), most undergraduate research occurs during the summer months. Research awards include a summer stipend and some funding for travel to Caltech as needed.
-
Alaska Summer Research Challenge:
A summer-NSF sponsored intern program for up to ten under-graduate minority students to spend the summer in Fairbanks, Alaska and study at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Students work under the direction of the Program Manager at the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center (ARSC) and are assigned projects where they work under the day-to-day supervision of individual researchers on active research projects. Minority students are recruited to study in target areas of Computer Science, which are traditionally underrepresented, such as programming, computer architecture and visualization.
-
Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science (SOARS):
A multi-summer, four year undergraduate and graduate program for students majoring in an atmospheric science or a related field. SOARS is dedicated to increasing the number of minority students enrolled in master's and doctoral degree programs in these fields.

NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates:
NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other
researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions.
-
Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships:
Places students in paid internships in Science and Engineering at any of several Department of Energy facilities. Many of the participants in the program have decided on a career in science and engineering because of the nature of the experience. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs.

-
Community College Institute:
Places students from community colleges in paid internships in Science and Engineering and Technology at any several different locations. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. They also attend career planning and numerous training/informationalsessions.
-
Partnership for Minority Advancement in Biomolecular Science:
National Internship Clearinghouse. Summer internships and research programs, stipends, travel funds, and other opportunities for undergraduates in the biological sciences.
-
Faculty and Student Teams Program.:
Faculty student research teams at Department of Energy, Office of Science Laboratories are supported in partnership with the National Science Foundation. Faculty from colleges and universities with limited prior research capabilities and those institutions serving populations, women, and minorities underrepresented in the fields of science, engineering, and technology are encouraged to take advantage of the FaST opportunity to prepare students for careers in science, engineering, computer sciences and technology and for their own professional development.
